My icelandic girlfriend and I had planned a trip to Iceland on april fifteenth. This was no ordinary trip. It was time for the families to meet each other. So here in Norway my parents had their bags packed and were ready to go. And in Iceland my girlfriends family (large one, as many icelandic families are!!!) had cleaned, baked and found every photograph of my girlfriend they could find. We were so excited and knew that this would be an amazing trip.

But then came april fourteenth. That day we got emails from Iceland, that the water levels from one of the glacier rivers was rising and the chance an erupting volcano was high. In the evening, we was followed the news about the eruption and heard about the ash.

On the fifteenth we gathered at my parent’s house and tried to gather as much information as possible. Would the airport open again? Would we have a family reunion ? After a few hours we understood that there was nothing we could do, at least not when it comes down to the forces of mother nature. With sadness at heart I started calling Icelandair and Loftleiðir hotel to cancel our trip (btw didn’t have any trouble getting through and cancelling, thank you Icelandair and hotel). My better half started calling around to her family. There were a lot of disappointed people both in Norway and in Iceland. But you must respect what you can’t change.

So now it's january and it is no longer just I and my better half. On the fifteen of January, on the day nine months after the eruption, we got a little norwegian-icelandic son.

We are so looking forward to take him on his first trip to his second home, Iceland. So he also can be “Lost in Iceland” :-)
